Sharman scores shootout winner

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Freshman forward Andrew Sharman (Kenmore/St. Joe's Collegiate) scored during a sudden-death shootout to send the Fredonia State Blue Devils to their third straight Days Inn Classic title.

Junior goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) was named tournament MVP. He made nine saves, including two brilliant saves to preserve a scoreless tie late in regulation. He also stopped five of six shots during the shootout.

Junior midfielder Victor Ianni (Rochester/Gates Chili) scored for the Blue Devils (3-1-1) during the first round of the shootout. Houghton defender John Ames (Hilton) countered for the Highlanders (1-3-1) during Round 2.

Neither team scored after the initial five-round shootout and the sudden-death shootout ensued. After Borchard stopped sophomore Vincent Wagner Egg Harbor City, N.J.), Sharman chipped a shot to the right of senior goalkeeper Steve Cox (Markham, Ont.). The ball deflected off the right post and bounced across the goal mouth just inside the opposite post.

The game is officially a 0-0 tie.

In the consolation game, three different players scored in New Jersey City University's 3-0 victory over Capital. Freshman Patrick Thomas (Rosell, N.J.), senior Jose DeBernard (Lawrenceville, N.J.), and junior Chris Rosenthal (Kearny, N.J.) scored the winners (4-1), ranked No. 19 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Division III poll. Senior goalkeeper Baba Guisse (Jersey City, N.J.) made seven saves.

In addition to Borchard, all-tournament selections from Fredonia State were senior midfielder Tim Cupello (Rochester/Aquinas), junior midfielder Brandon Derkacz (Hamburg/Hamburg), and sophomore defender Brian Annechino (Rochester/Penfield).

Other all-tournament selections were freshman forward Ernie Walton (Zionsville), junior midfielder Andrew Walton (Emmanus), and Cox from Houghton; DeBarnard and junior defender Cameron Hartsfield (Montclair, N.J.) from New Jersey City; and freshman defender Joey Linkhorn (Pickerington, Ohio) and sophomore defender Tony Miller (Springfield, Ohio) from Capital.
