Devils tie No. 8 ranked Cardinals

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Junior goalkeeper Matt Borchard (Williamsville/Williamsville South) made four saves as Fredonia State and Plattsburgh played to a scoreless tie Friday in SUNYAC men's soccer.

Borchard matched the play of his counterpart, Zack Manning (Endicott), who was credited with five saves for the Cardinals (10-0-2, 3-0-2), ranked No. 8 nationally in the latest coaches' poll. Plattsburgh is No. 1 in the Northeast region.

Plattsburgh outshot the Blue Devils (6-4-2, 3-1-1) in the game, 13-8, although neither team had an abundance of good scoring chances in the physical game.

Fredonia State's best chance came on a header by senior Tim Cupello (Rochester/Aquinas) during regulation play. Manning recovered from an earlier save attempt to catch the ball in the goal mouth.

Plattsburgh's Tim Stanley (Newport, Vt.) shot wide of the mark during overtime on what was his team's best chance for a goal.

The shutout for Borchard was his seventh of the season, including one in each of the last three games. He had seven shutouts in the previous two seasons combined.

The Blue Devils play at home again Saturday afternoon against Potsdam. Game time is 1 p.m.
