Waldron, five others reach standards

KENT, Ohio – Freshman high jumper Drew Waldron (Freedom/Pioneer) cleared 6 feet, 2 inches Saturday at the Kent State Golden Flash Gala.

The jump qualfied Waldron for the SUNYAC and NYSCTC indoor championship meets.

Five other Blue Devil men reached SUNYAC qualifying standards: junior Rob Larsen (Allegany/Allegany-Limestone) in the shot put; freshman Michael Pond (Somers/Somers) in the 3,000 meters; senior Aaron Johnson (Brockport/Brockport) in the 400 meters; sophomore Jason Smith (Queensbury/Queensbury) in the 5,000 meters; and freshman Brett Csont (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) in the 60 meters and the 200 meters.

Csont's SUNYAC qualifying double -- 7.39 in the 50 and 24.10 in the 200 -- coincided with the head coaching debut of his father, Paul, who received a two-year interim appointment in August. Paul Csont had served as a Blue Devil assistant coach since 1989.

The other performances were as follows: Johnson 53.43 in the 400; Pond, 9:14.63 in the 3,000; Smith a personal-best 16:05.99 in the 5,000; and Larsen 12.82 meters in the shot.
