Three Blue Devils selected All-Northeast Region
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Three Fredonia State soccer players -- two men and one women -- have been chosen 2006 NCAA Division III All-Northeast Region all-stars.
The men selected are junior midfielder Rob Esposito (Dover Plains/Dover), to the second team, and senior forward Matt Mahaffey (Lakeview/Frontier), to the third team as chosen by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, in conjunction with adidas®.
Esposito, a transfer from Herkimer County Community College, scored four goals and six assists in his first season at Fredonia State. He is being recognized for the third time this fall -- previously as First Team All SUNYAC, and First Team All Northeast Region by D3Kicks.com.
Mahaffey also earned First Team All-SUNYAC status this fall -- and for the second consecutive season -- after leading the Blue Devils with 16 points (6 goals, 4 assists). Also an All-Northeast Region all-star in 2005, he scored 21 goals and had 11 assists during his four seasons at Fredonia State.
The Blue Devil men posted a 12-7-2 record in 2006 and won the ECAC Upstate Tournament title.
On the women's side, junior back Danielle Bleecker (Pittsford/Pittsford-Mendon) was chosen to the 2006 NSCAA/adidas® NCAA Division III Women's All-Northeast Region Second Team. She was a Third Team pick in 2005, and has picked up All SUNYAC awards all three seasons as a Blue Devil, culminating this fall with her selection to the First Team.
She also received a third award this fall when she was chosen Tuesday to the 2006 New York State Women's Collegiate Athletic Association All-State Team. Bleecker scored three goals and had one assist in the fall. She has a total of seven goals and one assist over three seasons.
