Soccer tourney includes slate of fresh opponents

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- The 2005 Fredonia State Days Inn Classic will pit both Blue Devil soccer teams against colleges they have never played before.

The two-day tournament Sept. 9 and 10 on the Fredonia State campus will consist of a classic format in the men's division (pre-determined opponents both days) and first-round, championship and consolation games in the women's division.

The Blue Devil women will face first-time opponent Hiram College in the first round Sept. 9. In the other first-round game, Smith College plays Principia College, two schools Fredonia State also has never met in women's soccer.

In the men's division, the Blue Devils are scheduled to play Hiram College on Sept. 9. It's the first meeting between the schools in men's soccer since 1995 (a 2-1 Fredonia State win in the championship game of the Bethany College Tournament) and only their second meeting ever.

The Blue Devils will then face first-time opponent Rowan University on Sept. 10. Mount Union College is the fourth team in the men's field.

The tournament is sponsored by the Fredonia State Department of Athletics and The Days Inn of Dunkirk-Fredonia.
