Freshman earns win, homers vs. Plymouth State

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- It was a day of firsts for Fredonia State freshman Andrea Cornelius (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield).

The left-hander earned her first collegiate pitching win Monday in a 7-3 victory over Plymouth State (N.H.) at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic. She also connected for her first collegiate homer, one of seven extra-base hits by the Blue Devils (2-4), who also lost later in the day, 9-6, to Lawrence.

Freshman Andrea DeVon (Elmira/Notre Dame) led the Fredonia State offense with a 3-for-3 game, including a double and a triple, while freshman Carin Janis (Depew/Depew) was 3-for-4, including a triple. DeVon and Janis had two RBI each, while freshman Lisa Curtis (Greece/Greece Arcadia) and sophomore Brittany Connell (Geneva/Geneva) had one triple each. Senior right-hander Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) earned a save in relief of Cornelius. Mazurek allowed one hit and struck out five in 2 1/3 innings of work.

In the loss to Lawrence, the right-handed Janis fell to 0-2 this season after allowing seven runs -- only two of them earned -- in a five-inning starting assignment. Connell had three hits while Mazurek had two hits and four RBI to lead the offense. Janis and freshman Jaime Ryan (N. Chili/Churchville-Chili) also had two hits. Mazurek, Ryan, and sophomore Meghan Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) had doubles.

The Blue Devils have two more games Tuesday -- a doubleheader vs. The College of Wooster starting at 3 p.m.
