Devils fall to Union, Wisconsin-Whitewater

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- — Fredonia State dropped a pair of games Sunday on its third day of competition at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

In the first game, the Blue Devils (4-2) and Union College were locked in a pitchers' duel until the sixth inning. That's when Union broke open the game enroute a 7-2 victory. Junior righthander Cristina Reale (Geneva) was saddled with the loss and had two hits and an RBI as part of a six-hit Fredonia State offense.

The Blue Devils broke on top 1-0 on a single to right by sophomore Samantha Voncina (Angola/Lake Shore), a sacrifice bunt by freshman Kristy Sheridan (Buffalo/Mount Mercy), and a two-out double to deep center by junior Brittany Connell (Geneva). Union took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning, then padded their lead with three runs in the sixth inning, and two more in the seventh. Four of the final five runs were unearned.

Fredonia State scored its second run in the last of the sixth on back-to-back singles by Voncina and Sheridan and an RBI single by Reale.

In the second game Sunday, the Blue Devils fell to powerful Wisconsin-Whitewater, 10-2. Freshman righthander Adriana Connell (Geneva) took the loss, his first collegiate pitching decision. The Blue Devils were limited to three hits, including two by sophomore Samantha Kinkema (Lake City, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian). Sophomore Andrea Devon (Elmira/Notre Dame) had the lone RBI.

The Blue Devils are idle Monday before returning to action 1 p.m. Tuesday against nationally ranked DePauw and at 5 p.m. Tuesday against Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
