Sullivan tosses one-hitter as Devils split

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- A one-hit shutout by senior Ashley Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) carried Fredonia State to a 4-0 victory over Thomas College in the second of two games Friday at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

Earlier in the day, the Blue Devils (1-1) dropped their season opener, 7-1, to Plymouth State.

Against Thomas College, Sullivan allowed a lead-off single in the first inning, then was unhittable the rest of the way. She struck out four and walked three batters in the route-going performance.

Three of the four Fredonia State runs were unearned. Tonja Royce (Forestville/Forestville) started the first rally in the first inning with a single in the first inning, her first of two hits in the game. She advanced all the way to third and batter Lindsey Drum (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) ended up on second on an uncaught third strike and misplay. Both runners scored when a grounder off the bat of Brittany Connell (Geneva/Geneva) bounced away from the Thomas first baseman for an error.

Fredonia State took a 3-0 lead in the third inning when Sarah Kiehl (Lancaster/Depew) walked, stole second, and scored on an overthrow by the third baseman. The Blue Devils added an insurance run in the sixth on a single by Stephanie Bishop (Chittenango/Chittenango), a sacrifice by Ashley Sullivan, and an RBI pinch-hit single by Amanda Colburn (Jamestown/Falconer).

Errors worked against the Blue Devils in the first game of the day. Three of the runs allowed by Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) were unearned and negated an 11-strikeout performance. Meghan Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) went 3 for 3 in her first collegiate game, including a triple in the seventh. She scored Fredonia State's only run on a sacrifice fly by Staci Weidert (Hilton/Hilton).

Royce had two hits in her first game as a Blue Devil, and had a four-hit day. Drum also had two hits in the opener, and Weidert added a double.

The Blue Devils are back in action Saturday with two more games -- vs. Babson at 11 a.m., and vs. Wisconsin-Superior at 1 p.m.
