Mazurek earns SUNYAC honor off Florida trip

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State senior pitcher Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk) was named SUNYAC Pitcher of the Week following the Blue Devils' 10-game Florida swing.

Appearing in the circle in seven games, Mazurek posted a 3-1 won-loss record and a league-leading 0.22 earned run average, the result of allowing one earned run over a span of 31 2/3 innings. She also struck out 51 batters and helped out offensively with a .407 batting average with three doubles and seven RBI.

The Blue Devils (6-4) closed out the trip on a four-game winning streak. The final two victories came March 22 -- 7-2 over Franklin Pierce in the morning, and 9-4 over Albright in the afternoon. Mazurek earned the win in the first game with a 6 1/3 shutout innings. She struck out 12.

Offensively, freshman Leigh Palmer (Union City, Pa./Union City) started the scoring with a two-run double, freshman Andrea Cornelius (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) followed with a two-run homer, her second HR of the spring, and freshman Samantha Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore) hit her first collegiate homer, a three-run blast to cap a seven-run inning.

In the second game of the day, the Blue Devils pounded 13 hits -- three each by freshman Carine Janis (Depew/Depew) and Mazurek -- for their second win of the week over Albright. Janis raised her spring average to .519 (14 of 27) with a team-high 22 total bases and a .815 slugging percentage. Cornelius added three RBI and earned the pitching win, her third against one loss. Mazurek picked up her second save with three innings of relief.

It was the third time the Blue Devils won six games during their traditional season-opening Florida trip. The 2002 and 2004 teams also had 6-4 records at the Gene Cusic Classic. Those teams went on to finish 20-18 and 26-15, respectively.

The schedule resumes with a SUNYAC doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Utica against SUNY-IT.
