Devils end Florida trip with pair of losses

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Fredonia State dropped the final two games of its Florida swing Wednesday.

In the first game, Middlebury College pounded 19 hits in a 12-2 victory. The Blue Devils (5-5) then closed out their Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic competition with a 13-4 loss to Wisconsin-Whitewater.

The Blue Devils never led against Midddlebury as freshman Adriana Connell (Geneva) took the loss and dropped to 0-2. Offensively, freshman Kristy Sheridan (Buffalo/Mount Mercy) was involved in both runs. She singled up the middle, advanced to second on a groundout, to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a flyball to right by freshman Maria Siderakis (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) in the fourth inning. In the Blue Devil fifth, sophomore Samantha Kinkema (Lake City, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian) led off with a single. Adriana Connell later singled down the line in left and, with two outs, Sheridan singled to left to drive in the second Blue Devil run.

Against Wisconsin-Whitewater, the Blue Devils held leads of 2-0 and 4-0 before the Warhawks (7-2) began their comeback against junior Cristina Reale (Geneva). A Whitewater error, two walks, and two wild pitches led to the first two Fredonia State runs without the benefit of a hit in the last of the first. Junior Brittany Connell (Geneva) added to the lead with a two-run homer following a bunt single in the third inning. The Warhawks creeped back with a run in the fourth, two more in the fifth, and exploded for 10 runs in the sixth, including three homers. The Blue Devils were guilty of five errors which resulted in all 13 Whitewater runs being unearned.

Fredonia State returns north for its next action, a scheduled SUNYAC doubleheader Saturday at SUNYIT in Utica. A scheduled doubleheader Friday at Morrisville State has been postponed. No makeup date has been determined.
