In the first game of the day, Wisconsin-Whitewater overcame another strong pitching performace by junior Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) for a 2-0 victory. In the getaway game, a 4-for-4 batting performance by senior Ashley Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) went for naught in a 7-5 loss to Oberlin. Against Whitewater, Mazurek lost her second 2-0 decision in Florida -- this one, a three-hitter with six strikeouts -- by yielding two fourth-inning runs. One of the runs was unearned. The six strikeouts gave Mazurek 300 as a Blue Devil, a new school record. The previous record of 299 was held by Stephanie Saviola. It was the third Saviola career mark that Mazurek surpassed in Florida this spring. Previous marks to fall were for wins and innings pitched (currently at 26 wins and 314 1/3 innings). The Blue Devils (3-7) managed just four singles against Whitewater and their most serious threat came when they loaded the bases with two outs in the the seventh inning. The game ended on a strikeout. Four Fredonia State errors opened the door to a six-run fourth inning in the loss to Oberlin. Only one run allowed by freshman Sarah Burt (Cuba/Cuba-Rushford) was earned. Offensively, Sullivan had a triple and three singles to lead a 12-hit attack. Eight other Blue Devils had one hit. The Blue Devils play their first home games Saturday when they entertain SUNYIT in a SUNYAC doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
