Big innings propel Alfred over Devils

Fredonia, N.Y. -- Alfred used two big innings to erase early Fredonia State leads and claim a non-conference doubleheader sweep.

The Saxons (14-8) batted around and scored nine runs in the fifth inning of the first game, a 10-2 victory. They batted around again in the fourth inning of the secxond game, a six-run outburst in a 9-5 win.

Jordan Siefer (Sylvania, Ohio) and Jessica Figallo (Ridgewood, N.J.) had three hits each and Ilana Price (Wilton, Conn.) picked up the pitching win in the first game. Shannon Mather (Endicott) cracked a three-run triple and winning pitcher Holly Seidewand (Webster) had four hits and three RBI in the nightcap.

For the Blue Devils (8-8), freshman Samantha Kinkema (Lake City, Mich.) drove in both runs in the first game with a two-out, two-run double in the second inning. It staked her team to a short-lived 2-0 lead.

Senior Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk), the losing pitcher in the first game, hit her second homer of the season in the first inning of the nightcap. Freshman Samantha Vocina (Derby/Lake Shore) later connected for her third homer this spring to go along with a double and three runs scored. She also had a single in the first game, while freshman Bree Crossett (Wayland/Wayland-Cohochton) doubled and singled in the second game.

The Blue Devils return to SUNYAC play in their next games this week, a doubleheader Friday at Oswego and a doubleheader Saturday at Cortland.
