Cortland takes pair from Devils

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State lost both games of a doubleheader Saturday to defending SUNYAC champ Cortland, 8-0 and 16-1.

Cortland's Katie Finch struck out 11 and allowed one hit over five innings to pick up the win in the first game. Donnalyn Cross had two hits while Annemarie Nelson and Shara Evanter had two RBI each for the Red Dragons. Nelson and Bethany Williamson homered.

For the Blue Devils, sophomore Samantha Voncina (Angola/Lake Shore) had the only hit, a single off the center fielder's glove in the first inning. Cristina Reale (Geneva) was the losing pitcher.

Cortland took advantage of 10 walks to roll to its win in Game 2 and improve to 19-7 overall, 11-1 in SUNYAC. Nelson collected four RBI while Tina Milani had two hits and two RBI.

Voncina and sophomore Samantha Kinkema (Lake City, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian) had two hits while sophomore Jessica Thompson (Falconer) had an RBI double for the Blue Devils (7-13, 2-8 SUNYAC). Junior Brittany Connell (Geneva) also had a double. Sophomore right-hander Andrea Devon (Elmira/Notre Dame) was the losing pitcher.

The Blue Devils will look to improve their fortunes when they face Oswego in another home SUNYAC doubleheader Sunday. The first game will start at 1 p.m.
