Dragons defeat Devils twice in doubleheader

CORTLAND, N.Y. -- Senior Ang D’Amboise (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) tossed a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts in the opener and freshman Katie Finch (Amsterdam/Broadalbin-Perth) posted a three-hitter with nine strikeouts in the nightcap as Cortland (15-7, 4-0 SUNYAC) swept a doubleheader versus visiting Fredonia (8-10, 2-4) by 9-1 and 7-1 scores. The first game was called in the bottom of the sixth inning due to the eight-run rule.

D’Amboise, now 7-3, retired the first nine batters she faced before allowing a solo homer to freshman Samantha Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore) to lead off the top of the fourth. The round-tripper was Voncina’s fourth of the season, tying a school record.

The only other Blue Devils to reach base versus D’Amboise were senior Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk), who reached on an infield single two batters after Voncina’s homer, and sophomore Jackie Bryant (Sanborn/Niagara-Wheatfield), who drew a two-out walk in the fifth. Freshman Andrea Cornelius (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) suffered the loss for the Blue Devils. She allowed 11 hits and nine runs, eight earned, in 5 1/3 innings.

In the second game, Fredonia took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first. Voncina singled, but was forced out at second on a sacrifice bunt attempt by Mazurek. Freshman Andrea DeVon (Elmira/Notre Dame) then singled to right and a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third. Finch recorded a strikeout for the second out, but was called for an illegal pitch while facing the next hitter to allow Mazurek to score from third.

Finch settled down after that. She allowed a two-out single to sophomore Brittany Connell (Geneva/Geneva) in the second, then retired the final 16 batters she faced. She did not allow a walk and improved to 8-4 with the victory.

Mazurek pitched for Fredonia State and gave up 11 hits and seven runs, six earned, in seven innings. She struck out two and walked three.
