SUNYAC season start with losses to Brockport

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State opened the SUNYAC portion of its 2008 season with a pair of home losses to SUNY Brockport.

The Blue Devils (5-7, 0-2 SUNYAC) dropped the opener, 7-1, as Brockport batters combined for 18 hits and took advantage of five Fredonia State errors. The Golden Eagles (8-4, 2-0 SUNYAC) erupted for six runs in the fifth inning to break open a tight game en route a 9-3 victory in the nightcap.

In the opener, sophomore Samantha Voncina (Angola/Lake Shore) and sophomore Andrea Devon (Elmira/Notre Dame) had two hits each for Fredonia State. Voncina had the lone RBI and sophomore Jessica Thompson (Falconer) collected the only extra-base hit, a fifth-inning double to right-center.

Brockport's Courtney Turchan had four hits and teammate Hilary Dank had three. Stephanie Geer was the winning pitcher with nine strikeouts. Fredonia State's Cristina Reale (Geneva) was tagged with the loss.

In the second game, Brockport led 2-1 when it exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth. The Blue Devils mounted a slight rally but could not recover from squandered chances. They left the bases loaded in each of the first two innings and stranded 11 runners overall against Brockport lefthander Tarah Wetherby.

Freshman Amy Coniglio (Dunkirk) had three hits, including a double, to lead the Blue Devils' 11-hit attack. Freshman Maria Siderakis (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) doubled, singled, and drove in a run. Voncina also had an RBI.

Devon was the losing pitcher, her first defeat of the season (3-1). She scattered eight hits, including two more by Turchan, both doubles. Brockport's Melissa Boyle and Lindsay Szymanski had two RBI each.

After an off day Thursday, the Blue Devils are scheduled to play five doubleheaders in five consecutive days starting with SUNYAC games Friday at home vs. New Paltz.
