The first-game, a 10-inning pitcher's duel, featured Plattsburgh's Stephanie Zwieg (West Nyack/Clarkstown South) against Fredonia State's Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk). The pair matched zeroes for seven innings before Zweig was lifted in the top of the last of the eighth after yielding a lead-off double to Brittany Connell (Geneva/Geneva). Jacklyn Leitz (Burnt Hills/Burnt Hills-Ballston Spa) pitched out of the jam, while Mazurek, who worked all 10 innings, continued to keep Plattsburgh off the board until the 10th. By virtue of the tie-breaker rule, each team started with a runner at second base in the 10th inning. While the Cardinals cashed in, the Blue Devils did not. Stephanie Blood went to second for Plattsburgh, advanced to third on a passed ball, and scored in a bunt single by Kirby Davids (Brisbane, Australia). In Fredonia State's half of the inning, Mazurek started at second, eventually took third on a passed ball, but was stranded there. Zweig recorded 11 strikeouts in her seven innings of work while Leitze fanned five in three innings. Mazurek recorded 10 strikeouts. Plattsburgh's Jennifer Nescio (Pasadena, Md.) had three singles. In game two, the Cardinals (16-6, 4-0 SUNYAC) took command with a five-run second inning off losing pitcher Andrea Cornelius (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield). All five runs were unearned. Leitz pitched a complete-game five-hitter to pick up her second win of the day. She struck out 10 while Cornelius fanned seven. Each team had a homer -- Plattsburgh's Danielle Gjergji (Catskill/Catskill) had a solo shot in the fourth inning, while Fredonia State's Meghan Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) connected with the bases empty in the fifth. Gjergji also had a two-run double, while Samantha Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore) had a pair of doubles for the Blue Devils (8-12, 2-6 SUNYAC). The Blue Devils are back at home 1 p.m. Saturday vs. Potsdam.
