Devils blanked twice by No. 19 Cards

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- Nationally ranked Plattsburgh kept Fredonia State off the scoreboard Friday during a SUNYAC doubleheader.

A walk, a sacrifice, and a walk-off RBI single by Shannon Connors sent Blue Devil junior right-hander Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) to a hard-luck 1-0 loss in Game 1.

The Blue Devils (7-23, 3-11 SUNYAC) managed just two hits, singles by Sarah Kiehl (Lancaster/Depew) and Mazurek, during a 9-0 loss in the nightcap.

In the opener, Mazurek held the No. 19-ranked Cardinals (25-7, 13-1 SUNYAC) to five hits. She struck out 10 and walked one.

The Blue Devils had several scoring chances, the best one when they loaded the bases in the fourth inning on a single by Ashley Livermore (Randolph/Randolph), a walk, and a single by Ashley Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore). Two strikeouts ended the threat.

Kiehl opened the Fredonia State eighth inning with a single. Plattsburgh coach Sean Coter replaced starting pitcher Stephanie Zweig with Jaclyn Leitz, who yielded a sacrifice bunt to Mazurek before putting down the next two Blue Devils on strikes.

Leitz also fanned three straight batters in the Blue Devil ninth, and had 10 more strikeouts in Game 2. She earned both pitching victories.

Fredonia State will attempt to end a 10-game losing streak Saturday when they travel to Potsdam for another SUNYAC doubleheader.
