Devils take pair from Potsdam

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk) started the winning rally in the second game of a doubleheader and emerged with two pitching wins on the afternoon in a SUNYAC doubleheader sweep of Potdam.

Mazurek was a 10-1 winner in the first of the two games, a five-inning contest ended as a result of the eight-run mercy rule. The Blue Devils (10-12, 4-6 SUNYAC) scored in all four innings they batted.

The attack was led by Bree Crossett (Wayland/Wayland-Cohochton) with two doubles and three RBU, while Jaime Ryan (North Chili/Churchville-Chili) had two singles. Lisa Curtis (Greece/Greece-Arcadia) also had an RBI double.

Eliza Ladouceur (Heuvelton) had two hits, including a solo homer to account for the Potsdam offense.

In the second game, the extra-inning see-saw struggle saw the Blue Devils break out on top 1-0 in the first inning, fall behind 2-1, tie the game at 2-2, take the lead at 4-2, and fall into a 4-4 tie on a two-run double by Ladouceur in the last of the fourth. The teams went scoreless for the next four innings, although each team threatened.

With a runner on base and two outs in the last of the eighth, Mazurek relieved starting pitcher Andrea Cornelius (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) to get out of the jam. Then in the top of the ninth, Mazurek singled and went to third on a double by Andrea DeVon (Elmira/Notre Dame). After an intentional walk to Brittany Connell (Geneva), Crossett delivered her third double of the twinbill, this one good for two more runs. A single by Cornelius plated Fredonia State's third run in the inning.

Cornelius return to the circle to get the final three outs and earn her first collegiate save. She struck out seven and allowed just one earned run over 8 2/3 innings. Megan Strough (Lorraine/South Jefferson) was the hard-luck loser for the Bears (6-13, 2-4 SUNYAC).

The Blue Devils have a SUNYAC road doubleheader Sunday at Oswego before returning home Monday afternoon vs. Brockport.
