Devils end skid with win, tie

POTSDAM, N.Y. -- Fredonia State ended a 10-game losing streak Saturday with a win and the second tie in the 11-year history of the program.

The Blue Devils (8-23-1, 4-11-1) downed Potsdam, 6-1, in the first game of a SUNYAC doubleheader.

The Blue Devils and Bears (5-20-1, 2-13-1 SUNYAC) were tied 7-7 in the seventh inning of nightcap when the game was halted because of rain.

It was the second tie -- and the first one up north -- since Fredonia State started playing softball in 1996 (a span of 374 games). The previous tie was a scoreless duel with Albright College on March 18, 2001, at Fort Myers, Fla.

Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) allowed three hits and struck out 13 for the first-game win. Brittany Connell (Geneva/Geneva) had a hit, an RBI, a run scoed, and a walk. Meghan Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) had two hits.

In the nightcap, Mazurek again pitched a complete game while Amanda Colburn (Jamestown/Falconer) had two hits and two RBI, and Ashley Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) had two hits and two runs scored.

The Blue Devils return to action Monday with a home doubleheader vs. Penn State Behrend. First game is 3 p.m.
