Devils split doubleheader at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- Freshman lefthander Andrea Cornelius (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) pitched a six-hit shutout and freshman centerfielder Samantha Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore) cracked her fifth homer as Fredonia State defeated Oswego, 2-0, in the second game of a SUNYAC doubleheader.

Cornelius struck out seven and walked one to improve her record to 4-4. She stranded seven Oswego runners, including two in the first and two in the seventh. Meanwhile, Voncina homered in the fourth and added an RBI single in the sixth to account for the other Blue Devil run. Her homer broke the Fredonia State single-season school home-run record which she had been accomplished by three others, most recently Ashley Livermore in 2005.

The win lifted the Blue Devils to 11-13 overall and 5-7 in SUNYAC heading into a conference doubleheader at home Monday afternoon vs. Brockport.

In the first game, Oswego's Michelle Jackson earned the complete-game victory and the Lakers (5-13, 2-7 SUNYAC) used two singles, two walks, and two hit batters to plate three runs and break a 2-2 tie in the last of the fifth inning en route a 5-2 win. Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) dropped to 7-7 with the loss. She and Samantha Kinkema (Lake City, Mich.) had Fredonia State's run-scoring hits.
