Devils suffer tough loss to Brockport

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A windblown infield single in the last of the seventh brought home the only run in Brockport's 1-0 SUNYAC road win over Fredonia State in the second game of a doubleheader.

Rochelle Cantor (Rochester/Brighton) started the winning rally with a lead-off single off Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk). After straying too far off first, pinch-runner Ashley Broadhurst (Sanquoit/Utica-Notre Dame) avoided a rundown between first and second to receive credit for a stolen base. She was sacrificed to third by Brittany Schnautz (Pine City/Elmira Notre Dame) and scored when Sarah Wlodarczyk (Newar/Newark) hit a pop-up in the middle of the Blue Devil infield. A strong wind blowing in caused the ball to drift back toward the plate and out of the reach of Blue Devil second baseman Jaime Ryan (North Chili/Churchville-Chili), who made a diving attempt. Her throw to the plate was too late to retire Broadhurst.

Mazurek allowed only three hits -- the first with two outs in the sixth inning. She struck out three and walked three. Winning pitcher Kelly Briscoe (Stuyvesant/Ichabod Crane) scattered five hits, two of them the fourth inning when it appeared the Blue Devils (11-15, 5-9 SUNYAC) had broken through for a run. Andrea Cornelius (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) started the inning with another windblown infield single. Samantha Kinkema (Lake City, Mich./North Central Christian) was called on to sacrifice with one out and successful advanced pinch-runner Malysa Mosier (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) to second. Leigh Palmer (Union City, Pa./Union City) then singled up the middle, but Mosier was called out on a disputed play at home on a throw from centerfielder Wlodarczyk to Brockport catcher Lindsay Szymanski (Cheektowaga/JFK).

In the first game, the Blue Devils made six errors, including several in the final two innings, to run a tight game into a 9-1 loss. In the last of the fourth, Samantha Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore) added to his single-season school record -- and gave her team a 1-0 lead -- with her sixth homer of the spring. But the defense let down Cornelius, who pitched a complete-game loss. Rachel Zimmerman (Jamestown/Jamestown) earned the win with a three-hitter, including a second hit by Voncina, a bunt single. Courtney Turchan (Smithtown/Smithtown) had two hits and two RBI for the Golden Eagles.

Fredonia State returns to SUNYAC competition Wednesday with a home doubleheader vs. Buffalo State at 3 p.m.
