Extra-inning win earns Devil sweep over SUNYIT

UTICA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State swept a SUNYAC doubleheader over SUNYIT, 6-0 in the first game and 5-4 in eight innings of the nightcap.

Bree Crossett singled with two outs in the top of the eighth of Game 2 to plate Amy Coniglio, who reached on an infield error to start the inning. Kristy Sheridan sacrificed Coniglio to second and Crossett -- who earlier had homered and singled -- bounced a single to center to score Coniglio.

Cristina Reale, pitching in relief of Andrea Devon, earned her second victory of the day to improve to 7-11. Reale tossed a five-hit shutout in Game 1.

The Blue Devils (10-22, 5-15 SUNYAC) jumped to a 4-0 lead in the first game on the strength of a three-run triple by Andrea Devon and an RBI single by Reale. Jessica Thompson's RBI double in the fourth made it 5-0. Thompson singled and scored on a throwing error in the top of the seventh.

Reale struck out five, did not walk a batter, and induced 12 groundball outs. In addition to Thompson having two hits, so did Sheridan and Samantha Voncina.

The Blue Devils lost Voncina's services with a thumb injury in the bottom of the first inning of Game 2. That brought Crossett back into the game and she responded with three hits, including her second homer of the season, a solo shot to give the Blue Devils a 4-2 lead in the fifth inning.

SUNYIT tied the game with unearned runs in the fifth and seventh innings, with the tying run scoring on a triple with no outs. Following two intentional walks to load the bases, the next SUNYIT hitter lofted a fly into short right-center field. Right fielder Maria Siderakis made the catch, pivoted quickly, and threw to the plate. The throw arrived just ahead of the runner and Crossett applied the tag for the double play. Reale struck out the next batter to pitch out of the jam.

In addition to the three hits by Crossett, Sheridan cracked three singles, Brittany Connell was 2 for 2 with an RBI, and Jessica Cole had an RBI single.

The Blue Devils have a scheduled doubleheader Saturday afternoon at University of Rochester before closing the season with a doubleheader Sunday at Morrisville State.
