Rain intervenes with Devils working on split

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- A strong thunderstorm which roared across the University of Rochester campus Saturday afternoon wiped out the second game of Fredonia State's scheduled doubleheader vs. the host Yellowjackets.

Up 4-1 heading into the top of the fifth inning, the Blue Devils (10-23) were bidding to split the twinbill after dropping Game 1, 9-1. It was the 12th straight win for the Yellowjackets (24-10).

Fredonia State's Cristina Reale was cruising along as storm clouds brewed in the west. She held the lead on the strength of a two-out, four-run rally in the second inning. Kristy Sheridan had an RBI single and Jessica Thompson doubled in two more runs. Sheridan scored when Thompson's ball was misplayed in the outfield. All the runs were unearned.

Then lightning strikes forced stoppage of play and, before the tarp could be pulled, a torrential downpour soaked the field. The threat of more rain caused officials to cancel the game and wipe all statistics off the books.

In Game 1, Rochester scored five first inning runs on four walks, two wild pitches, a hit batsman, and back-to-back doubles by Erin Clark and Alicia Citro. The Yellowjackets tacked on four more runs in the third inning -- all unearned. Jessica Sorrentino hit her ninth home run of the year -- a solo shot in the third -- to complete the scoring.

Andrea Devon hit a solo homer for the Blue Devils while Paige Nigh was tagged with the pitching loss. It was Devon's first homer of the season, and Nigh's first collegiate pitching decision in her second appearance.

The Blue Devils close out their season with a doubleheader Sunday at Morrrisville State.
