Devils close season with split at Morrisville

MORRISVILLE, N.Y. -- Fredonia State closed its 2008 season with a split of a SUNYAC doubleheader against Morrisville State.

The Blue Devils (11-24, 6-16 SUNYAC) won the first game, 10-0, in five innings behind the three-hit pitching of Cristina Reale (Geneva). The host Mustangs bounced back for a 4-3 victory in the nightcap.

The Blue Devils rapped 15 hits in the first game, with junior Brittany Connell (Geneva) and freshman Kristy Sheridan (Buffalo/Mount Mercy) connecting for three hits each. The three hits lifted Sheridan to a team-leading and season-ending .396 batting average.

Reale opened the scoring with a two-run single as part of a five-run first inning. Freshman Maria Siderakis (Webster/Webster-Thomas) followed with a two-run single before sophomore Samantha Kinkema (Lake City, Mich./Northern Michigan Christian) singled in the fifth run.

The Blue Devils scored two runs in the second on RBI singles by sophomore Andrea Devon (Elmira/Notre Dame) and Devon. A two-run third inning included a double by Siderakis and an RBI single by Kinkema. A double by Connell and an RBI single by freshman Paige Nigh (Endicott/Union-Endicott) accounted for final Fredonia State run in the fourth inning.

In Game 2, Morrisville State scored four unearned runs in the top of the first inning off Devon. The Blue Devils countered with three runs in the fourth inning, including RBI singles by Siderakis, freshman Amy Coniglio (Dunkirk), and an RBI groundout by freshman Jessica Cole (Hobart/South Kortright).

But the comeback -- and the season -- ended there.
