Hitters hot, then not, at Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State's bats heated up in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Oneonta, resulting in a 9-6 win.

The bats were silenced in the second game in a 4-0 loss.

As a result of the split, the eighth-place Blue Devils (12-18, 6-12 SUNYAC) will need to win twice Sunday at New Paltz and await the outcome of the Oneonta-Buffalo State doubleheader to learn their fate toward a SUNYAC playoff berth. The top six teams qualify.

Down 3-1 in the first game, the Blue Devils scored twice in the fourth for a 3-3 tie. The Red Dragons (11-23, 7-11 SUNYAC) retook the lead with three runs in the last of the fifth before Fredonia State erupted for five runs in the sixth and added an insurance run in the seventh. The five-pack included RBI doubles by Meghan Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) and Brittany Connell (Geneva), while Samantha Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore) hit homers in the game. It was Voncina's school-record eighth round-tripper this spring. In addition, she's one homer short of the career HR mark held by Heather Mercer. For Mazurek, it was her third homer of the season. In addition, she picked up the pitching win with an 11-strikeout performance. Connell and Lisa Curtis (Greece/Greece Arcadia) had three hits each to lead a 14-hit Blue Devil attack.

The offense hit a snag in the second game as five hits were all the Blue Devils could manage. Sullivan and Leigh Palmer (Union City, Pa.) had two hits each. Losing pitcher Andrea Cornelius (Niagara Falls/Niagara-Wheatfield) added a double.
