Geneseo rallied for a 7-6 win in the nightcap to improve to 8-8 overall, 5-1 in the SUNYAC. In the first game, senior right-hander Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) scattered five hits and struck out five while the Blue Devils (8-6, 2-2 SUNYAC) broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the last of the sixth. A lead-off double by Samantha Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore) started the winning rally. Mazurek sacrificed Voncina to third, and Andrea DeVon (Elmira/Notre Dame) drove in the go-ahead run with a single. After a fly-out, Brittany Connell (Geneva/Geneva) cracked a two-run homer to right-center, her first in two seasons with the Blue Devils. She became the sixth Blue Devil to homer this spring. DeVon had two hits in the game while Kristen Newton (Whitesboro/Whitesboro) had two singles for Geneseo. Kerry Kuhn (Ballston Lake/Shenendehowa) pitched a complete game and took the loss. In the second game, the Blue Devils took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a double by Voncina and Mazurek's first collegiate homer, a drive to dead center, thereby becoming the seventh Blue Devil with a round-tripper in 2007. The Blue Devils added to their lead with a four-run fourth, capped by a three-run homer by Voncina, her second of the season. Geneseo began its comeback with five runs in the bottom half of the inning. RBI hits included a double by Christina Marinucci (North Tonawanda/Niagara Wheatfield), a single by Sara Weisenborn (Williamsville/Williamsville North), and a two-run single by Liz Squairs (Liverpool/Liverpool). The Blue Knights also scored a run during a rundown. Mazurek replaced Blue Devil starter Andrea Cornelius (Niagara Falls/Niagara Wheatfield) in the fifth inning and held Geneseo scoreless until the last of the sixth, when a bunt single by Weisenborn was followed by a stolen base and an RBI single by Kristen Newton (Whitesboro/Whitesboro). Kristen Carroza (East Hampton/East Hampton), the third Geneseo pitcher in the game, pitched out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam of her own making in the top of the eighth inning, the first extra inning of the regulation seven-inning game. Geneseo then plated the winning run in the last of the eighth on a lead-off double by Marinucci, a sacrifice bunt, two semi-intentional walks, and a single over the drawn-in infield by Newton. It was her third hit of the game. Voncina led the Blue Devil offense with three hits and three RBI. In addition, Jaime Ryan (N. Chili/Churchville-Chili) had a double and a single in two at-bats. The Blue Devils are scheduled to play SUNYAC doubleheaders this Friday at New Paltz and Saturday at Oneonta.
