Losses at New Paltz end season for Devils

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. -- Fredonia State's bid to secure a SUNYAC Tournament berth fell short with 2-0 and 8-0 losses Sunday at New Paltz.

The Blue Devils (12-20, 6-14 SUNYAC) finished in eighth place in the conference standings. The top six teams qualified for the conference tournament, which begins Friday at top-seeded Cortland.

Conversely, New Paltz, by virtue of its two wins over the Blue Devils, made the six-team tournament for the first time since 1998.

The Blue Devils managed just four hits in the two games vs. the Hawks (17-19, 10-10 SUNYAC), one in each game by freshman centerfielder Samantha Voncina (Derby/Lake Shore). Voncina finished the season as the Blue Devils' leading hitter (.323) and run-producer (23 runs scored, 19 RBI). She also led in stolen bases (8 in 10 attempts), doubles (8), and set a single-season school record for homers (8).

Senior righthander Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk) was saddled with the loss in the first game. She allowed five hits and no earned runs while striking out seven. The lone four-year player on the 2007 roster, Mazurek leaves the program as the holder of several all-time pitching records, including most wins (38), most strikeouts (506), and most innings pitched (522). In addition, her career earned run average (1.98) is second lowest in program history. She also holds numerous single-season pitching marks.

The only other senior on the 2007 roster was reserve infielder K.C. Conklin (Hornell).
