Devils split with New Paltz

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State jumped into an early lead and held on for a 7-2 win in the first game of the SUNYAC doubleheader against New Paltz.

The Blue Devils (6-10, 1-5 SUNYAC) dropped the second game, 9-6, when New Paltz's Justine Scutaro cracked a three-run homer in the top of the seventh.

Junior righthander Cristina Reale (Geneva) was credited with both pitching decisions. She earned the win in the first game with 3 1/3 innings of relief. Reale pitched a complete game and took the loss in Game 2.

The Blue Devils scored two runs in the first inning and four more in the second in the first game. They collected 13 hits with freshman Kristy Sheridan (Buffalo/Mount Mercy) smashing a double, two singles, and driving in two runs. Sophomore Jessica Thompson (Falconer) had two singles and three RBI, sophomore Bree Crossett (Wayland/Wayland-Cohochton) had a double and a single, and freshman Maria Siderakis (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) also had two singles.

Down 4-0 in the nightcap, the Blue Devils rallied to take a 5-4 lead before falling. Offensively, Thompson collected three more hits, including a double, junior Brittany Connell (Geneva) homered and singled, sophomore Samantha Voncina (Angola/Lake Shore) had two singles, and Sheridan had a single and two RBI.

The Blue Devils' scheduled doubleheader Monday at Medaille has been postponed. Their next action is a SUNYAC doubleheader Tuesday at Geneseo.
