Game 2 win produces split with Geneseo

GENESEO, N.Y. -- Jessica Cole (Hobart/South Kortright) drove in three runs and Cristina Reale (Geneva) recorded four strikeouts as the Fredonia State softball team won the second game of a doubleheader against Geneseo, 4-3, in SUNYAC play. The Blue Devils dropped the first game, 9-5.

Cole came through with two clutch hits in the nightcap — a two-out, two-run double in the second inning and a two-out RBI single in the fourth.

"Jessica hasn't been a starter," Blue Devil coach Lorrie Corsi told the Dunkirk Observer. "But she came through big time today. It was a real good confidence booster for her and she really picked our team up."

Andrea Devon (Elmira/Notre Dame) also had two hits for Fredonia State (7-11, 2-6) including a bloop single in the fifth that plated the winning run.

Reale started the rally with a two-out walk. Then, Brittany Connell (Geneva) reached base on an uncaught third strike to set the stage for DeVon who drove in Reale's pinch-runner, Kelsey Sherwood (Forestville).

"I was real pleased with the second ballgame," Corsi said. "In the first game, we made too many mistakes — both in the field and mentally. But we bounced back and played like we should play. We came through in tough situations and Cristina (Reale) pitched an excellent ballgame. Behind her, we played to our potential defensively."

Reale was the winning pitcher. She allowed seven hits and retired the game's final nine batters.

Maria Siderakis (Webster/Webster-Schroeder) and Bree Crossett (Wayland/Wayland-Cohochton) led the Blue Devils' offensive output in the opener, collecting two hits apiece. Kristy Sheridan (Buffalo?mount Mercy) added a two-run home run. DeVon suffered the loss.

The Blue Devils will play next on Friday when they host Oswego in a SUNYAC doubleheader. They will followed with two games against Cortland on Saturday.
