Devils went 3-6 on Florida trip

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Junior Ashley Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) and junior Amanda Waite (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) emerged as the top performers for the Blue Devils during the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

Sullivan batted .296 with team highs in hits (8), extra-base hits (3), RBI, total bases (12), and slugging percentage (.444). In the pitching circle, Sullivan was 1-3 with a 2.90 earned run average. Her victory was a 5-1 one-hitter in the season opener vs. Dickinson College on March 18.

Waite batted a team-high .333 while hitting out of the lead-off position in nearly all of the nine games in Fort Myers and Cape Coral, Fla. She also scored a team-high four runs.

In addition to Sullivan and Waite, junior Nikki Prentice (Frewsburg/Frewsburg) and junior Staci Weidert (Hilton/Hilton) were the only other players to bat .200 or above. Prentice batted .286 and Weidert .222 in part-time duty.

The Blue Devils were 3-6 on the trip. Sophomore Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) won two of the games – a 2-0 two-hitter March 18 vs. Salve Regina, and 4-3 decision over Franklin Pierce, an NCAA Division II school, on March 24 in which she pitched three scoreless innings of relief.

Mazurek was two outs away from a third win March 23 vs. Albright. With the Blue Devils leading 1-0 in the fifth inning, a lengthy equipment delay preceded a thunderstorm which washed out the game before it became an official contest.

Junior Ashley Livermore (Randolph/Randolph) hit the team’s lone homer down south. Her solo shot came in the win over Salve Regina and broke a scoreless tie at the time.

Prentice had a two-run triple, followed by an RBI single by Weidert, during a three-run fifth-inning rally vs. Franklin Pierce, to erase a 3-1 Blue Devil deficit.

Meanwhile, senior Jennifer Grabowski (West Seneca/West Seneca West) had a pair of RBI singles in the season-opening win over Dickinson.

NOTES: The Blue Devils' scheduled SUNYAC doubleheader Saturday at SUNYIT has been postponed. No make-up date has been announced.
