Devils double up on Brockport

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – A dose of doubles and a timely two-run single were the ingredients Fredonia State used Thursday to down SUNY Brockport in both ends of a SUNYAC doubleheader.

The Blue Devils (15-9, 6-4) rapped four doubles -- three in one inning -- for an 8-0 victory in the first game of the pair. They had two more doubles in the nightcap, but it was a two-run single by Ashley Gierszewski (Angola/Lake Shore) which loomed largest in the 4-1 second-game win.

Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) earned the victory in the first game and a save in the second game. In four innings of work, she allowed no runs and no hits and improved her record to 7-3 with two saves.

Ashley Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) won the second game with six scoreless innings. She allowed six hits.

Amanda Waite (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) had a double and two singles in Game One. Her double was the first of three in a three-run first inning. Heather Mercer (Horseheads/Horseheads) followed with a two-run double, and Jen Grabowski (West Seneca/West Seneca West) followed suit with an RBI double. Nikki Prentice (Frewsburg/Frewsburg) capped a five-run second inning with a two-run double.

The eight-run mercy rule resulted in the first game ending after five innings. Mazurek, Sullivan (who faced one batter and allowed a hit) and Aimee Hammill (Lewiston/Niagara Catholic) combined on a one-hitter.

In Game Two, the Blue Devils were leading 1-0 on an RBI double in by Sullivan in the second inning when Gierszewski came through with a two-run single in the fourth inning.

With her team leading 4-1 in the seventh, Mazurek came on with relief and earned a save by striking out two batters and getting the final out of the game on a grounder to third.

The Blue Devils return to action Friday afternoon when Oswego visits the Fredonia State campus. The SUNYAC doubleheader starts at 3 p.m.
