Fredonia State 4, Kalamazoo 2

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Amanda Waite (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) pitched a five-hitter Wednesday as Fredonia State defeated Kalamazoo College, 4-2, at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.

Waite (1-1), a sophomore right-hander, was making her third start of the spring and it was her most effective outing so far. She struck out eight, including the last two batters of the game, and walked three.

Jen Grabowski (West Seneca/West Seneca West) had a double and a sacrifice fly to lead the Fredonia State offense. She also scored a run during a three-run third inning.

Ashley Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) cracked two singles for the Blue Devils (6-3), winners of three straight games at the season-opening Gene Cusic Classic.

The Blue Devils broke on top in the third when Ashley Gierszewski (Angola/Lake Shore) led off the inning with a single. Heather Mercer (Horseheads/Horseheads) dropped a sacrifice bunt that was misplayed twice by the Kalamazoo defense. Both Gierszewski and Mercer scored on the play.

Grabowski followed with a one-out double to left and Sullivan delivered an RBI single.

The Blue Devils were clinging to a 3-2 lead when they added an insurance run in the fifth inning. Mercer led off the inning with a pop to short left, which was dropped for a two-base error. Pinch-runner Meghan Flaherty (Cassadaga/Cassadaga Valley) went to third on an infield out and scored on Grabowski’s sacrifice fly to center.

Waite set down six of the next seven batters to nail down her first collegiate pitching victory.
