Aimee Hammill (Lewiston/Niagara Catholic) improved to 4-0 this spring and Andrea Carlson (Forestville/Pine Valley) had three hits and two RBI for the Blue Devils (18-10, 9-5), the first SUNYAC team this season to defeat the Red Dragons (26-4, 13-1). Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) pitched out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning by allowing just one run and leaving two runners standed. It was her third save this season. Cortland won the first game of the doubleheader, 5-1, behind the four-hit pitching of Stephanie Adamschick (Milton). Carin Piacente (Putnam Valley) had two singles and two RBI and Nicole Fredericks (West Babylon) had two singles for the Red Dragons. Mazurek (9-4) was the losing pitcher in Game 1. Jennifer Grabowski (West Seneca/West Seneca West) had two hits and Nikki Prentice (Frewsburg/Frewsburg) an RBI single with two outs in the last of the seventh to ruin the shutout bid by Adamschick (9 strikeouts). Cortland jumped to a 2-0 lead in Game 2 with a run in each of the first two innings. Fredonia State tied the game with two runs in the fourth, the first scoring on a double by Grabowski and the second on a single by Prentice. The Blue Devils grabbed a 4-2 lead with two more runs in the fifth inning. Carlson doubled in one run off Ang D'Amboise (Ballston Lake), pitching in relief of Lara Almanansberger (Fairport). Carlson scored from third when Cortland threw out a runner trying to steal second. Cortland cut its deficit to 4-3 with a run in the sixth inning. The Blue Devils added a run in the top of the seventh. Amanda Waite (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) grounded a two-out single inside the bag at third and scored when Carlson doubled into the left-center field gap. After a leadoff single in the seventh, Mazurek relieved Hammill and promptly yielded two more singles to load the bases. She pitched out of the jam after allowing just one run to score and leaving the potential tying and winning runs stranded. Pip Colombo (Williamsville) doubled and singled for Cortland. Fredericks and Jen Rockwell (Scotia) had two singles each. The Blue Devils meet SUNYIT at 11 a.m. Sunday at Fredonia State. Athletics Home | Fredonia Home
