Dragons oust Blue Devils

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland defeated Fredonia State, 9-2, to eliminate the Blue Devils from the SUNYAC Tournament.

The Red Dragons scored three runs in the first inning off losing pitcher Aimee Hammill (Youngstown/Lewiston Porter). That was more than enough support for winning pitcher Stephanie Adamschick, who improved to 20-1 this season.

Cortland added six runs in the sixth inning before the Blue Devils (26-15) broke through for their only two runs in the last of athe sixth. An RBI groundout by Ashley Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) and a throwing error accounted for the Fredonia State runs.

The loss brought an end to the winningest season in school history -- the previous-best was a 21-15-1 finish in 2001. It was also the final game for senior center fielder Heather Mercer (Horseheads/Horseheads), a two-time All SUNYAC selection and holder of school records for hits, runs, doubles, homers and stolen bases.
