Devils split a pair of games

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Fredonia State split a pair of games Friday at the Gene Cusic Classic.

Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) pitched the Blue Devils (2-1) to a 7-0 victory over Lasell, Mass.

Earlier in the day, Grinnell, Iowa, topped Fredonia State, 5-3, in a game played at Cape Coral, Fla.

Mazurek allowed two hits over six innings and struck out six in her first collegiate pitching appearance. She had a no-hitter until the first batter of the fifth inning single sharply to left.

Aimee Hammill (Lewiston/Niagara Catholic) pitched one scoreless inning in relief.

Andrea Carlson (Forestville/Pine Valley) had a single and an RBI triple to lead the Blue Devil offense. Heather Mercer (Horseheads) added a double.

Earlier in the day, the Blue Devils had defensive lapses in two innings and those proved costly. Four of the five runs allowed by Amanda Waite (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) were unearned as Grinnell improved to 4-4.

Waite had five strikeouts and allowed two walks. She, too, was making her first collegiate pitching appearance.

Offensively, Nikki Prentice (Frewsburg/Frewsburg) had a triple and Carlson had an RBI single against Grinnell.

The Blue Devils play their fourth game of the spring 9 a.m. Saturday against Suffolk, Mass.
