Devils top MIT to earn split

FORT MYERS, Fla. - Ashley Sullivan drove in the winning run Sunday in Fredonia State's 8-6 victory Sunday over Massachusetts Institute of Technology at the Gene Cusic Classic.

The Blue Devils (3-3) lost to Plymouth, N.H., 3-2, later in the day.

Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) connected for a two-run double to break a 6-6 tie in the last of the sixth inning. It was her third hit of the day and her third and fourth RBI.

Colleen Russell (Brockport/Brockport) started the winning rally with a pinch-hit single leading off the sixth.

Aimee Hammill (Lewiston/Niagara Catholic) was the winning pitcher. The freshman lefthander allowed two runs on three hits over 6 2/3 innings of relief pitching. It was her first collegiate victory.

Andrea Carlson (Forestville/Pine Valley) had two hits and two RBI for the Blue Devils. Heather Mercer (Horseheads/Horseheads) scored three runs and made a diving catch in center to snuff out an MIT rally in the fourth inning.

In the second game Sunday, the Blue Devils were limited to three hits by a pair of Plymouth pitchers -- singles by Russell, Nikki Prentice (Frewsburg/Frewsburg), and losing pitcher Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk).

Mazurek took a 2-1 lead into the last of the fifth, when Plymouth scored the tying and go-ahead runs.

The Blue Devils have two games Monday: 11 a.m. vs. Hillsdale, Mich. (an NCAA Division II team) and 3 p.m. vs. Colby, Maine.
