Union snaps Fredonia State winning streak

FT. MYERS, Fla. – Fredonia State closed out its Florida swing with a 6-1 loss Thursday to Union College at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic.

Defensive lapses undermined the pitching of Ashley Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore), who allowed all six runs – but only one earned run – in 3 2/3 innings of work.

Reliever Aimee Hammill (Lewiston/Niagara Catholic) worked 3 1/3 scoreless innings. She walked two and held Union without a hit. Opponents batted .086 against her over 11 innings in three Florida appearances.

Kim Menth (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) was 3-for-3 at the plate for the Blue Devils (6-4). Her triple to deep right and a single by Ashley Gierszewski (Angola/Lake Shore) accounted for the only Fredonia State run.

Dunkirk High graduate Julie Gawronski had an RBI single and a stolen base for Union (7-1).

The loss ended a three-game winning streak by the Blue Devils. Their six wins ties the 2000 team’s mark for most wins in Florida by a Fredonia State softball team.

In addition, senior Heather Mercer (Horseheads/Horseheads) continued to move up several career offensive lists during the trip. She moved up from third to second in hits (133, three behind all-time leader Melanie Yaskulski), from fifth to fourth in total at-bats (397) and out of a two-way tie for second in triples (10). She also added to her career team lead in runs scored (102).

The Blue Devils are scheduled to open the northern portion of their schedule – and their SUNYAC season – Wednesday, March 31, at Buffalo State.
