Devils shutout Geneseo in first round

CORTLAND, N.Y.Jennifer Grabowski (West Seneca/West Seneca West) had an RBI double to break a scoreless tie and send Fredonia State over Geneseo, 1-0, in the first round of the SUNYAC Tournament Thursday at Dragon Field.

Grabowski's double drove in Heather Mercer (Horseheads/Horseheads) from first base in the top of the seventh inning. Mercer, who reached base on an error, was running on the pitch on what turned out to be a perfectly timed hit-and-run.

Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) pitched a complete-game three-hit shutout. Mazurek (14-5) struck out seven and issued no walks. It was her fifth shutout of the season.

Audrey Kuhn (14-9) was the losing pitcher. She allowed just two hits, struck out six and didn't issue a walk. Until Grabowski doubled, Amanda Waite (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) had the only Fredonia State hit - a fourth-inning single.

The Blue Devils (26-13) will face Oneonta at noon Friday on the second day of the six-team double-elimination tournament.

Geneseo was forced to play a second game Thursday against Plattsburgh, with the loser being the first team out of the tournament.
