Mazurek wins, saves in Devils' sweep

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) pitched only five innings Friday against New Paltz, yet earned a win and a save.

Mazurek started and pitched the first three innings of the first game, halted in the fifth inning by the eight-run mercy rule. She struck out five and didn't allow a hit in the 9-0 Fredonia State victory.

Jen Grabowski (West Seneca/West Seneca West) hit a two-run homer in the first game of the twinbill. She had an RBI double in the second game, a 4-3 Fredonia State win.

Also for the Blue Devils (12-9, 3-3), Amanda Waite (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) had four RBI in the doubleheader, including three in the first game on a double and a single. Mazurek also had two hits and Ashley Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) two RBI in Game One.

Aimee Hammill (Lewiston/Niagara Catholic) and Stefanie Dickinson (Hilton/Hilton) each pitched one scoreless inning in relief.

Sullivan started the second game and left with a one-run lead in the sixth inning. Mazurek stranded two New Paltz runners in the sixth, and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the seventh when shortstop Andrea Carlson (Forestville/Pine Valley) ranged into short left to catch a pop fly for the final out.

Heather Mercer (Horseheads/Horseheads) had two hits and scored two runs, including an insurance tally to make it 4-2 in the fifth. Grabowski's double brought the run home.

For the Hawks (4-12-1), LiZ McPartlan (Huntington Station) had three hits in the nightcap. Carrie Briscoe (Stuyvesant) struck out seven, including four in the first inning.

Both teams are back in action Saturday -- New Paltz at Buffalo State, and Fredonia State at home against Oneonta (1 p.m.).
