Mercer's hit earns split vs. Oneonta

FREDONIA, N.Y.Heather Mercer (Horseheads/Horseheads) hit an RBI double for the go-ahead run and Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) made the lead stand for a 2-1 Fredonia State victory over SUNY Oneonta in the second game of a SUNYAC doubleheader.

Oneonta won the first game, 2-1, behind the one-hit pitching of Amy Herba (Johnsontown).

The Blue Devils (13-9, 4-4) salvaged a split after Mercer's smash to the fence in left-center scored Andrea Carlson (Forestville/Pine Valley) from first. Carlson had singled to lead off the inning.

Mazurek completed her marathon day -- she pitched complete games in both games -- by retiring 9 of the final 11 Oneonta batters, including three on strikeouts. She finished with seven strikeouts in the game while improving her record to 6-3.

Mercer had three hits while Amanda Waite (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) singled and scored the first Fredonia State run. She led off the first inning with a smash off the first baseman's glove. After she was sacrifice to second by Carlson, Waite took third on a single by Mercer and scored when the Red Dragons (13-9, 5-3) botched a rundown between third and home.

Liz Scimeca (Sayville) was the losing pitcher for Oneonta. She also led her team's offense with two doubles and a run scored. Michelle Norwich (Mohawk) had an RBI single.

In the first game, the Red Dragons took a 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Scimeca. They scored on unearned run in the second inning to made it 2-0.

The Blue Devils scored their only off Herba in the third inning. Following a two-out walk to Waite, Carlson stroked an RBI double -- her team's only hit off Herba, who struck out five and issued only one walk.

Mazurek strucked out seven, walked two and yielded only four hits. One of the Oneonta hits was a double by Amanda LaPolla (New Hartford). She also scored her team's first run.inning.

The Blue Devils return to action Tuesday afternoon at Brockport State.
