Oneonta needs 12 to down Blue Devils

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Fredonia State dropped to 1-1 in the SUNYAC Tournament with a 2-1 12-inning loss Friday to Oneonta.

Rena Finsmith singled, reached second on a throwing error, and scored on a single by Michelle Norwich to break a 1-1 tie in favor of the Red Dragons (24-14).

Amy Herba pitched six scoreless innings of relief to nail down the victory, while Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) pitched a complete game in defeat. Only one of the runs Mazurek allowed was earned.

Heather Mercer (Horseheads/Horseheads) homered for the only Fredonia State run.

The Blue Devils (26-14) were attempting to remain unbeaten in the tournament and advance to Saturday's action without having to play again Friday. Instead, the loss sent them into loser-go-home meeting with tournament host Cortland later Friday.

Mazurek (14-6) allowed 12 hits but pitched out of numerous jams with the help of outstanding defense.

Second baseman Ashley Gierszewski (Angola/Lake Shore) and third baseman Jessica Haefner (Hamburg/Frontier) both made outstanding catches. Shortstop Andrea Carlson (Forestville/Pine Valley) made a diving stop to get an out and also made a pivot as part of a double play when Oneonta failed to get down a successful bunt with runners on first and second with no outs.

Mercer's homer came in the last of the sixth with the Blue Devils trailing, 1-0. It came off Oneonta starting pitcher Liz Scimeca, who allowed one run over the first seven innings.

Mercer and Carlson had two hits each for the Blue Devils.
