Mazurek claims single-season win mark

POTSDAM, N.Y.Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) set a school record for pitching wins in a season with a 2-0 victory Saturday over the Potsdam Bears.

The Blue Devils (25-11, 14-6) also won the second game of the SUNYAC doubleheader, 8-2, to run their winning streak to seven games -- their longest stretch of the season.

The 14 conference wins surpasses Fredonia State's previous-best single-season record of 12 by the 2001 team.

Mazurek's victory was her 13th of the season and her fourth complete-game shutout. She allowed three hits, walked two, and had eight strikeouts. The freshman righthander overtook Stephanie Saviola's two 12-win seasons (2000, 2001) on the Fredonia State record list. In addition, Mazurek lowered her earned run average to 0.96 --- 0.54 in conference games.

The Blue Devils scored both run sin the sixth inning. Andrea Carlson (Forestville/Pine Valley) had a one-out single. Ashley Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore) and Jennifer Grabowski (West Seneca/West Seneca West) followed with a double and a triple, respectively. Amanda Waite (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) had two hits in the game.

Carlson hit her first collegiate homer, a two-run blast, to highlight Fredonia State's offense in the second game Saturday. She and Grabowski had two hits each while Amanda Drummond (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) had two RBI.

Sullivan was the winning pitcher with relief from Aimee Hammill (Lewiston/Niagara Catholic). Hammill allowed no runs and one hit over the final three innings.

The Blue Devils conclude their regular season Tuesday with a doubleheader at the University of Rochester, a final tuneup for the SUNYAC Tournament next weekend.
