Corsi, Mercer, Mazurek honored

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Lorrie Corsi is 2004 SUNYAC Softball Coach of the Year.

Two members of his record-setting softball team have been selected All SUNYAC by conference coaches.

The All SUNYAC team was announced Thursday, April 29, at a banquet in Cortland, site of the SUNYAC Tournament.

Corsi was selected Coach of the Year for the second time – he was previously honored in 2000 – after guiding the Blue Devils to 26-15 finish, including a 14-6 SUNYAC mark. The total wins and SUNYAC wins are single-season school records.

Before the season began, conference coaches predicted a seventh-place finish for the Blue Devils. They finished tied for fourth.

Fredonia State’s 2004 All SUNYAC selections are senior center fielder Heather Mercer (Horseheads/Horseheads) and freshman pitcher-first baseman Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk).

Mercer batted .365 with seven doubles, one triple and one RBI in 20 SUNYAC games. She led the Blue Devils in all those categories as well as runs (14), total bases (32), stolen bases (10), and slugging percentage (.508). Overall, she batted a team-high .336 with four homers and 19 RBI.

An All SUNYAC First Team and ECAC Upstate Division III selection in 2003, Mercer is the all-time Fredonia State leader in numerous offensive categories, among them: batting average (.340), hits (169), runs (128), doubles (37), home runs (9), and stolen bases (52). She is also second in triples (11) and fourth in RBI (62).

Mazurek wasted no time entering her name in the Fredonia State record book. Her 13-5 record during the regular season broke the single-season school record for wins. She added a win in the SUNYAC Tournament – finishing 14-6 overall – and set a single-season record for earned run average with an 0.88 mark. She also had four saves.

In addition, she pitched 134 2/3 innings and registered 115 strikeouts. Those are the third best single-season totals in school history. In regular-season SUNYAC games only, Mazurek was 9-3 with four saves – second in the conference -- and a 0.54 ERA. She also fanned 75 batters in 77 2/3 innings. She is among the conference leaders in several pitching categories.
