No-hit in first game, Devils get even

FREDONIA, N.Y. – Fredonia State freshman Casey Mazurek (Dunkirk/Dunkirk) made an early lead stand Sunday for a 3-2 victory over SUNYIT in the second game of a SUNYAC doubleheader.

SUNYIT's Krista Hess (Canton) pitched a no-hitter in the first game. She struck out nine and allowed only one runner to get as far as second base in a 5-0 victory.

The Wildcats (11-11, 3-7) broke open a 1-0 game with four runs in the seventh inning off losing pitcher Ashley Sullivan (Derby/Lake Shore). A two-run double by Diana Wagner (Dundee) was the big hit in the inning. Wagner had three RBI in the game and Hess doubled and singled.

The Blue Devils (19-11, 10-5) wasted no time getting hits in the second game. A one-out single by Andrea Carlson (Forestville/Pine Valley) was the start of a two-run first inning. Heather Mercer (Horseheads/Horseheads) followed with an RBI double. Mercer later scored on a single by Sullivan.

Her teammates staked Mazurek to a 3-0 lead with one run in the second inning. Kim Menth (Tonawanda/Tonawanda) led off the inning with a triple down the line in right. She scored on a liner to center by Ashley Gierszewski (Angola/Lake Shore).

Mazurek was touched for an unearned run in the fifth inning and a run in the last of the seventh before nailing down her 10th win of the season against four losses. She also has three saves and a 1.02 earned-run average.

Carlson finished with two hits in the second game of the doubleheader. Wagner had two singles for SUNYIT.

The doubleheader Sunday was the final home appearance for seniors Mercer and Brianna Kusior (Silver Creek/Silver Creek), who started and played left field in both games.

The Blue Devils are back in action Tuesday -- a doubleheader at St. John Fisher.
