Freshman diver qualifies for nationals
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State freshman diver Kelly Sponholz (Alden/Alden) qualified for the NCAA Division III championship meet in two events Saturday.
In the process, the Blue Devil women defeated Hartwick College, 129-114, and SUNY Oneonta, 154-91.
Sponholz had 454.40 points for 11 dives off the 3-meter board, and 268.05 points for six dives in the 1-meter competition. In addition to meeting the NCAA qualifying standards, both scores were school and pool records.
Sophomore freestyler Lexie Chapman (Lockport/Lockport) was a triple winner for the Blue Devils. She won the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle, and was part of the winning 200-yard freestyle relay.
Double winners included junior Cassie Austin (Cuba/Cuba-Rushford), and freshman Liz Mirt (Rochester/Aquinas). Austin soloed in the 50-yard freestyle, Mirt in the 200-yard individual medley, and the two were part of the winning 200-yard medley relay.
The Fredonia State men flirted with an upset of Oneonta but fell short. Freshman Rob Rumsey (Grand Island/Grand Island) was the lone winner with a season-best 2:03.60 in the 200-yard individual medley.
Team scores for the men were Oneonta 126.5 to Fredonia State's 104.5; and Hartwick's 158 to Fredonia State's 69.
The Blue Devils are off until Feb. 8, the first of four days of the SUNYAC Championship meet at Eric County Community College in Buffalo.
