Austin sets two pool marks in win over RIT
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Senior freestyle specialist Cassie Austin (Cuba/Cuba-Rushford) set two new pool records Saturday in Fredonia State's 152-91 women's swimming and diving victory over Rochester Institute of Technology.
Austin set new marks in the 50-yard freestyle (:25.61) and the 100-yard freestyle (:55.74). Her 50 free time tied her own school record and bested a pool mark set in 2004. The 100 free pool mark she broke had been on the board since 2003. She also swam the first leg on the winning 400-yard freestyle relay (3:49.59).
In 1-meter springboard diving, sophomore Kelly Sponholz (Alden/Alden) won the event and recorded an NCAA Division III provisional qualifying score with 247.85 points. She also broke her own school and pool record in the event.
Other event winners for the women were freshman Lindsay Aromola (Hamburg/Frontier) in the 200-yard butterfly (2:30.98), freshman Monica Dunlevy (Batavia/Batavia) inthe 500-yard freestyle (5:34.30), junior Lexie Chapman (Lockport/Lockport) in the 200-yard breast stroke, and junior Teresa MacInnes (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) in 3-meter diving (235.35 points).
On the men's side, freshman Mike Seay (Grand Island/Grand Island) won three events and freshman Noor El-Tahawy (Port Washington/Schreiber) won two in the Blue Devils' 146-95 loss.
Seay was first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:01.54), the 100-yard freestyle (:49.36), and the 200-yard breast stroke (2:21.50). El-Tahawy was first to touch the pad in the 200-yard butterfly (2:00.77) and the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.99).
RIT's Quinn Ponohoe posted a winning 1-meter springboard score of 271.80, also a pool record and an NCAA D-3 provisional qualifying effort.
The Blue Devil women improved to 2-0 while the men dropped to 1-1 heading into next Saturday's meet at Geneseo.
