Austin wins, men's quartet sets pool mark

FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Senior freestyle sprint specialist Cassie Austin (Cuba/Cuba-Rushford) won the 50-yard freestyle on the opening night of the Fredonia State Blue Devil Invitational.

Austin's winning time was 25.80 seconds, .11 seconds faster than her preliminary time earlier in the evening. She defeated second-place finisher Kelly Williams of Oswego by .26 seconds.

Meanwhile, the Fredonia State men's 400-yard medley relay team set a pool record of 3:42.7. The foursome consisted of freshman Alex Palmquist (Olean/Olean), senior Brian Ruffles (Angola/Lake Shore), freshman Noor El-Tahawy (Port Washington/Schreiber), and freshman Mike Seay (Grand Island/Grand Island).

In addition, Seay finished second in the 50 free with a time of :22.23, and senior Chris Oaks (Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon) was third in the 1,650-yard freestyle.

Among the women, freshman Monica Dunlevy (Batavia/Batavia) was third in the 1,650-yard freestyle. Freshman Amanda Nelson (Frewsburg/Frewsburg) was sixth.

The Invitational has four more sessions: 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Sunday.
