Sponholz qualifies for third NCAA meet
FREDONIA, N.Y. -- Fredonia State junior Kelly Sponholz (Alden) is headed back to the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship meet for the third straight year.
The official NCAA Division III psyche sheet released Friday afternoon lists Sponholz, the reigning SUNYAC champ in both 1-meter and 3-meter springboard diving, as among the 22 women entered in each event at nationals March 13-14-15 at the Miami (Ohio) University's Corwin M. Nixon Aquatic Center. The College of Wooster is the meet host.
An honorable All-American as a freshman, Sponholz received full-fledged All American status in 2007 by finishing third in the 1-meter and fifth in the 3-meter events. Her third-place showing is the best-ever by a Fredonia State woman in the sport.
Missing from the list of entrants is Fredonia State senior Teresa MacInnes (Tonawanda/Kenmore East). Previously listed as a provisional qualifier, MacInnes -- runner-up to Sponholz in both diving events at the recent SUNYAC meet -- was attempting to compete in the nationals for the first time.
The men's official psyche sheet will be released next Friday. Two more Fredonia State divers, senior Scott Horsington (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) and sophomore Christian Torres (Dunkirk), have provisionally qualified for the national meet, to be held March 20-21-22.
