The quartet is led by freshman Kelly Sponholz (Alden/Alden), who finished first in preliminaries, then recorded 187.10 points for five dives later Wednesday at the Flickinger Aquatic Center on the Erie Community College-City campus. Sponholz is undefeated in all competition this season. Sophomore Teresa MacInnes (Tonawanda/Kenmore East) is second in the competition after the first round of five dives with 173.80 points. In addition, junior Kelly Maloney (Corning/Corning-Painted Post West) is sixth with 151.80 points and junior Laura Walther (Livonia/Livonia) is seventh with 147.00 points. All four women will perform six more dives Thursday: three in the afternoon, and the final three at night. In men's 1-meter diving Wednesday, junior Brian Ruffles (Angola/Lake Shore) finished 11th after preliminaries and did not advance to the finals, where only the top eight divers compete. The SUNYAC Championships run through Saturday with preliminaries (10 a.m.) and finals (6 p.m.) scheduled each day.
