Two days after finishing third in 1-meter springboard diving, Sponholz finished fifth in the 3-meter event with 434.35 points for 11 dives. It represented an improvement of nine places at the NCAA; she was 14th as a freshman last season. The top eight finishers earn All-American status. Junior Doria Holbrook of Mass. Inst. of Technology won the 3-meter competition with 480.90 points. When she finished third in the 1-meter competition Thursday, Sponholz became the first Fredonia State woman to become All-American in the sport, and recorded the highest finish by a Blue Devil since backstroker Jim Healy was second at the 1968 NAIA meet. The three-day meet was held at the University of Houston Recreation Center. The men's championships will be held there next weekend, with Blue Devil senior Scott Horsington (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) competing in both diving events.
